The Chinese Sharpei is an ancient breed whose name translates as sand skin. The lineage of the Chinese Shar-Pei can be traced back to the Han Dynasty 200 B.C. when they found works of art featuring very similar appearing dogs. Some historians believe the breed was descended from a much larger (now extinct) Tibetan breed and others believe it is related to the Service Dogs of Southern China. This is a hunting and herding dog . Like many Chinese dog breeds, Shar Peis almost became extinct when the Chinese Communist government imposed a steep dog tax in 1947 and their numbers sharply declined. The breed survived in Hong Kong, Taiwan and British Columbia, Canada.
The first Sharpei was imported to the U.S. in 1966 from stock registered with the Hong Kong Kennel Club. 1973- Matgo Law of Down-Homes Kennels in Hong Kong appealed to U.S. dog fanciers to "Save the Chinese Shar-Pei". The rarity of the breed sparked an enthusiastic response. Recipients of a limited number of Shar-Pei that arrived in U.S. formed the Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America in 1974.

Shar-Pei are intensely loyal to their family and make excellent watch dogs. Like all dogs,
however, they should be socialized through puppy and obedience classes. Some Shar-Pei are aloof toward strangers, but once befriended, they never forget people who they have come to know. Because Shar-Pei have a quick intelligence and are eager to please their family, theyare very easily trained. Shar-Pei are intelligent, regal and confident.

They can weigh as adult 45-60 lbs and be 18-20 inches at the withers. These are medium sized dogs.

Shar-Pei come in colors : black, red, red-fawn, fawn, black-pointed cream, sable, blue, chocolate dilute, red-pointed dilute, apricot-dilute, and cream-dilute. Any solid color is acceptable, but albinism, spots, patches, saddle-patterns, and two-tone patterns are a disqualification. Black-pointed dogs have solid-black to slate-gray tongues. Dilute-colored dogs have solid lavender tongues. A spotted tongue is a
major fault, and a pink tongue is a disqualification.
